Soften Hollows, Not Hide Them

Dark shadows under the eyes often have nothing to do with sleep. When the tear trough — the groove between the lower eyelid and the cheek — loses volume, the thin skin there casts a shadow concealer can’t fully cover. At Aesthetic Dermatology Associates, board-certified dermatologists use filler formulated for this delicate area to soften that hollow and restore a rested look.

What Is Under Eye Filler?

Under eye filler, also called tear trough filler, is a hyaluronic acid gel chosen for thin, mobile skin. The skin under the eyes measures a fraction of the thickness found on the cheek, so the products used here spread softer and more evenly than fillers built for the lips or cheekbone. A denser product placed in this area can show through the skin and create a bluish cast known as the Tyndall effect.

Most injections in this region use a blunt-tipped microcannula instead of a needle. The technique reduces the number of entry points and lowers the risk of bruising or contacting one of the small vessels that run close to the surface here.

Results appear once swelling resolves. Like other HA fillers, the treatment can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if you want it reversed at any point.

What Under Eye Filler Can Address

Not every shadow under the eye comes from the same cause, and treatment only works when it targets the right one.

Volume-Related Hollows

As the fat pads and bone supporting the lower eyelid shrink with age, a visible groove forms between the eyelid and cheek. Filler placed along this groove fills the gap and removes the shadow it casts.

Shadowing From Thin Skin

Some patients have thin under-eye skin from genetics rather than aging, which lets the underlying muscle and blood vessels show through as a dark tint. Filler adds a layer that diffuses light differently and softens that discoloration, though it won’t erase true pigmentation.

Bags vs. True Hollowing

Puffiness from fat pads pushing forward is a different problem than hollowing from volume loss, and filler does not improve it. The two sometimes appear together, with hollowing below the bag creating a more pronounced shadow. We assess which pattern applies to you before recommending treatment, since filler placed under true bulging fat can make the bulge look worse.

Why This Treatment Requires a Specialist

Few areas of the face punish a heavy hand the way the tear trough does. Too much filler, or filler placed too close to the surface, creates a visible blue-gray tint or a puffy look that mimics the bags patients came in to treat.

The region sits near the infraorbital artery and within the danger zone associated with the rarest, most serious complications of facial filler, including vision changes. A board-certified dermatologist injects conservatively, understands this anatomy in detail, and keeps hyaluronidase on hand in case of vascular compromise.

This is one of the few filler treatments where less is reliably better, and an experienced injector knows where to stop.

rects that gap directly, building up the lower side rather than trying to reduce the higher one.

Your Under Eye Filler Appointment

We begin with a close look at your under-eye area, checking skin thickness, the depth of hollowing, and whether bags or fat protrusion complicate the picture. Photos taken in different lighting often reveal shadows that are easy to miss in a mirror.

Topical numbing goes on before injection. Because we typically use a microcannula rather than a needle, the number of injection points stays low. The procedure itself takes about 15 minutes.

Bruising shows up more often here than in other treatment areas, because the skin is thin and vessels sit close to the surface; ice right after treatment helps. Mild puffiness can appear for a few days, especially in the morning, and settles within a week to ten days.

We schedule a follow-up around two weeks out to confirm the result looks right in natural light and make any small adjustment.

How Long Under Eye Filler Results Last

Under eye filler lasts 9 to 12 months on average, somewhat shorter than cheek filler. The area sits close to the eye’s constant blinking motion and benefits from a conservative, lower-volume approach that metabolizes a bit faster than denser structural fillers elsewhere.

Because under-correction is always the safer starting point here, many patients return for a small top-up around the nine-month mark rather than waiting for results to fade completely.

Under Eye Filler Pricing at Aesthetic Dermatology

Under eye filler is priced per syringe, though most patients need less than a full syringe to treat both sides. We quote based on the amount actually used, not a flat per-eye fee.

Frequently Asked Questions About Under Eye Fillers

Is under eye filler painful?

Most patients describe mild pressure rather than pain, especially with topical numbing and a microcannula technique that limits the number of needle entries. Thinner areas of skin can feel more sensitive than others.

Can under eye filler make dark circles worse?

It can, if too much product is placed or the wrong cause gets treated. Filler placed under bulging fat pads, for example, can accentuate the bulge instead of softening it. An accurate assessment before treatment matters as much as the injection itself.

How long until I see results?

Most of the improvement shows within a few days, once initial swelling resolves. Final results settle in over one to two weeks.

Will I need filler somewhere else too?

Sometimes. Hollowing under the eyes often connects to volume loss in the cheek just below it, and treating the cheek can soften the under-eye shadow on its own. We’ll discuss whether cheek filler, under eye filler, or both make sense for your face.

Can under eye filler be reversed?

Yes. Like other hyaluronic acid fillers, it dissolves with hyaluronidase, typically within a day or two of treatment.
